DOG FENCE TRAINING
The most important part of having a wireless fence system is making sure your pet is uses it correctly. A wireless fence is deemed worthless if your pet just runs through it as if its not there. Training a pet to use the fence is fairly easy to do. All you need is to commit three fifteen sessions each day for about two weeks. Some pets learn faster than others but a dog shouldn’t take any longer than a month to be properly trained. If this is not the case you should look into other methods of containing your dog.
The principle is simple; you must first teach the dog that when he hears the tone, he needs to head back to the containment area.
- The first thing you need to do is to teach your dog to retreat once he first sees the boundary flags.
- After the dog sees the boundary flag he must react to the warning beep that is given once he gets to close to the boundary and retreat.
- After the dog is introduced to the boundary flags and the warning beep the next step is to introduce the consequence for ignoring the warning beep and flag.
- The trainer must make sure the dog understands that if he does not retreat once the warning beep is heard that he will get a correction.
- After the dog understands the consequences of crossing over the boundary line the trainer must now test his temptations.
- For instance, the trainer could stand on the opposite side of the boundary line to see if the dog is tempted to cross over.
- This step teaches the dog that boundary rules are to be followed even if there is a playmate or any other temptations on the other side.
- Start with taking off the leash for a few minutes at a time.
- Over time increase the time off the leash in till you can leave the dog unsupervised for an entire day.
Step one: Introducing the fence
Step two: Introducing the Correction
Step three: Testing Temptations
Step four: Taking off the leash
NOTE*
After your dog has had enough time to get used to the wireless fence system, you can start removing the training flags. But you do not want to remove all the flags at once, start by removing every other flag in till all the flags are removed.
